8th Grade Standard IV-Objective 3 Simple Machines

Standard IV: Students will understand the relationships among energy, force and motion.
Objective 3:
Investigate the application of forces that act on objects and resulting motion.

Enduring Understanding Unbalanced forces cause change in the motion of objects, while balanced forces do not. Machines give us a mechanical advantage to either change the direction of force or reduce it over a longer distance. Friction acts to reduce mechanical advantage in machines.

“I Can” Statements

  1. I can design an experiment to test the doubling of the length of a lever arm and it’s affect on the force needed to lift an object.
  2. I can describe the creation of movement in an object.
  3. I can measure how friction affects the mechanical advantage of a machine.
